I remember loving Social Studies as a student of Steve's, and for me, that was an accomplishment in itself~He truly cared for his students and succeeded in being a great teacher~ Over the past several years whenever I'd run into him around town, he continued to smile and ask how I was doing. I'm thankful for the years at MHS that I was surrounded by genuine teachers that truly cared for their students.

Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolence from colleagues at Morehead High School at this extremely sad time. I taught with Steve at Morehead during his entire twenty-six-year career. I remember a shy young teacher who loved to read, had a gentle smile, and a wonderful sense of humor. I treasure those early days at Morehead High. On behalf of many young students who looked to you for guidance and instruction, I remember you. You were part of a Morehead family that forever touched my life--a family that inspired me to be a dedicated educator and a better person. I have memories to keep for a lifetime, and you are a part of them. Rest in Peace, my fellow Panther.

Mr. Steve Newlin was a wonderful caring Director of the School Bus Drivers; he understood all the challenges and was always cool and calm. I also enjoyed his Social Studies Current Events class! I wish I could have kept in touch with him after Morehead. I'll see him in Heaven!!

To Steve's Family, This is a great picture, just as I remember him as my Social Studies teacher fresh out of college. Such a caring person and he made class fun and enjoyable while learning. The perks of having a young teacher fresh out of college in the 70's! We all have suffered a loss of a caring individual from our past. Rest in peace, Steve... Beth Hairfield Shelton

The Newlin family, over the years, made many contributions to the health of our community, especially through their service at Morehead High School. In remembering Steve, we should also pay tribute to the Newlins and what they gave to make MHS a wonderful experience for so many of us.

We have such wonderful memories of Steve. Mr. Newlin called me out of geometry class one day (scared me to death)and asked me if I would take my study hall and tutor Steve in geometry! I was so happy that I was not in trouble, I said yes immediately! Wade and I gave Steve rides to and from App State all the years we were there together and enjoyed every trip. So sad for this to happen and our condolences to Carl and others who loved Steve. Also, we agree with Sam, the Newlins were huge influences in all our lives...all for good! Rest in Peace our friend. Reflecting on how much of an influence this man had on my life... He was my tennis coach from high school years.... he believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. While life took some different turns for Steve, he still made a difference in my life. Rest in peace my coach and my friend. Enjoy your reunion with your Mom and Dad and Brother....You mattered.

Steve wasn't just my teacher he was a good friend, I helped him in the concessin stands during my years at MHS, and always enjoyed him getting me out of class so I could go get the concession snacks. He was just a caring person and I hate that I lost contact with Steve when I moved to Virginia but will always have fond memories of him. My prayers are with everyone at this time of sorrow.

As is so often the case, too late we wish to have spent more time with a friend or family member. This is how I feel in learning of Steve's passing. I remember thinking how hard it would be for me should my father be the Principal of my school; and respecting Steve for how gracefully he seemed to handle his Dad's strong rule. I certainly felt Mr. Newlin's presence the minute I walked into MHS. I would have never gotten away with anything. I remember Steve as a handsome, kind, popular young man who was liked by many of his classmates. Carl, and family, please know that we are very sorry for all the losses you have experienced in your family. Pam Atkins

I had Steve Newlin for Social Studies when I was at Morehead. He put a spin on teaching that made us students actually get it. I am sending prayers to his loved ones left behind. Mr. Newlin will be missed.

I was so saddened to hear about Steve's death. The past week many fond memories from junior and senior high school have flooded my mind of our time together on and off the tennis court. Thirty years later I can still hear his hilarious quips in my mind as we traveled to numerous tennis tournaments. My sincere condolences to the family.

Steve and I were born less than a week apart and attended school together until we graduated from Morehead in 1965. He was always a good friend who brought humor to many a situation. I had only seen him a few times since high school, but could always pick up an easy conversation as if we'd just seen each other the day before. My memories of him will always be good ones. My prayer is that the family may take comfort in memories of what a wonderful person he was. Sincerely, Trish Mabes Randall

Steve was ahead of me at Morehead. But, we were in a few clubs together and I always enjoyed him. He was a fellow Baptist and I think I really got to know him at Church. I left Morehead in 1965 and graduated from Hargrave in 1967. My fondest memory of Steve was in the summer of 1967. I worked constuction and he helped a lot to learn the ropes. You really get to know some one when you work with them. I will never forget his kindness.

My deepest sympathy goes to the family of Steve. I worked with Steve for approximately 10 year during the time he was teaching at Morehead. I trained the Bus Drivers and Steve was in charge of selecting the drivers to be trained. He was always pleasant and a pleasure to work with. I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his death.
