My thoughts are with you. I knew him for the last 6-7 years. I worked at Dairy Queen where i met him the first time. He used to come in and buy out our ice cream sandwiches. He said< "he needed to gain weight and those were the only thing he could eat alot of!" He was such a joy to serve when we seen him come in. I will truly miss him! What a great person! <3

I just learned of Russell's death. My emotions are running deep with memories of him strong and handsome on the football field, sweet and caring as a man, always thinking of others, fierce in his devotion to his friends. He handled his illness with such grace. It's ironic to me that only four years ago he was Dal's "rock" as Dal went through his own battle with cancer. My family and I will forever be in his debt for all that he did for us. Maybe the two will meet up and talk about old times on that big football field in the sky. Love to all of the family. I had never met Russell until my dad, Dallas Gwynn, got sick in 2007. Russell became a very important person to my whole family during that time and I will never forget everything he did out of love, kindness and generosity for my dad. On what would be my dad's last Christmas with us, Russell helped my dad dress, drove him to my mother's house and carried him up the steps so that he could join us in celebration. I will always hold a special place in my heart for Russell and thank God that I was able to know him even but for a short time.

When my brother Dallas was terminally ill, Russell visited him regularly, took him out to eat, and drove him around. I walked in on the two of them once at Arbor Ridge and they were arguing about the Second Punic War! I'm very sorry to hear of his death.

To Russell's family, I want you all to know I thought a great deal of Russell. He was in our golf groups at Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, as well as an outing in Pinehurst 2 or 3 years ago when we first realized he was not doing so well. As he struggled with his illness, he still was the most kind and reverant of golf buddy you could ask for. He was generous, polite, humorous and actually beat several of his fellow golfers handily while he was sick, making him notable for his over-achievements and admired for his winning. He was a man I truly am proud to say was my friend. He will be missed by not only myself, but I think I can honestly say for all those who know not yet of his passing, that he was an inspirational man and a great human being. May peace be with you in your time of sorrow. My humblest condolences, Steve Miller

I was deeply saddedened to learn of Russell's passing. He was a very caring and compassionate gentleman who I never heard say anything negative about anyone except, maybe, some politicians. I know in my heart that he is no longer suffering and that heaven is a better place now that he is there. I pray that he will now be able to hit them longer and straighter, but not too often in the same round. I will always remember his smile and his easy-going attitude about life and continue to be amazed at never hearing him complain about the cards life dealt him with his cancer. Rest in peace, My Friend...I will see ya on the back nine.

There is no one who I thought any more of than Russell. I feel like I have known him my whole life, starting probably from the days at the Draper Y. The last time I saw him was at Russ Mundy's funeral and he was upbeat then as always. He and Russ were probably the two best all around athletes ever to come out of Draper. This is a great loss for a lot of folks.

Frances and Wylie, words cannot describe how sad I am to learn today of Russell's passing. We went through 12 years of school together with so many good times and memories. As the years passed I regret we didn't see each as much as we would have liked but when we did it was always very "special". I will never forget how genuine and caring he was and always had that happy smile. He was a true friend and will not be forgotten. My sincere condolences. Dock & Cheri Gilley
