Christine Lewis Powell, 96, formerly of Meadow Road in Eden, passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Morehead Nursing Center. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, June 10 at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs Powell was born June 18, 1914 in Stokes County, NC, daughter of the late Judson and Beulah Wade Lewis. She was a member of Spray Baptist Church. Surviving is her sister, Novella Lewis Sullivan of Stoneville; niece, Modena Price and husband, Bernard of Danbury, NC; and four nephews, Archie Carter of Greensboro, Lowell Lewis and wife, Dot of Greensboro, Phillip Lewis of Greensboro, and Wade Carter and wife, Skippy of Raleigh. In additon to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Edward Powell; brother, Walter Franklin Lewis; and sister, Elizabeth Lewis Carter. The family will receive friends a half hour prior to the service on Friday (10:30 am to 11 am) at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Dear Christine Powell Family, I was Christine's pastor at Spray Baptist. I wanted to extend my condolences at this time along with the Church at Spray Baptist. We are sorry for your loss. On my visitation rounds at Morehead Nursing Center I tried to look in to see or talk with Christine from time to time. Often she was sleeping. Other times she was awake. I did have a few brief conversations with her and prayer for her on several occasions in her room.A few times the nurses would wake her up and I would also to speak with her. The last time I saw her was on the day before she passed on a Monday afternoon. She was awake but not very responsive. I just wanted you to know that she was visited. I hope that you take comfort that her suffering is over and she is in a better place and her heavenly home. Thanks be to God that God is the God of all comfort.Take care and God bless.
