Barbara Jean Dowdy Owens, 76, of 858 E. Meadow Road, passed away early Friday morning, May 20, 2011, at Morehead Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 7 PM on Sunday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Owens was born June 25, 1934 in Danville, VA, daughter of the late Robert Melton and Bessie Roach Dowdy. She was a 1951 graduate of Schoolfield High School and later attended Allen's Beauty School. Mrs. Owens was a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church. She was a retired beautician. Surviving is her son, Larry Owens of Eden and Keith Owens and wife, Jamie of Eden; two grandsons, Benjamin Owens and his fiancee, Brittany Smith, and A. J. Harbour and wife, Bridget; granddaughter, Ariel Owens; and her devoted friend of many years, Christine Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Owens; and three brothers, Roy, Eugene, and Jerald Dowdy. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service (6 - 7 PM) at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Larry and Keith, I so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing as we grew up she was like a second mom to me as well. I know that she love her family without a doubt. I remember seeing her several times when I came home as Mom and I would go see her and just sit and talk as we talked about old times when we were kids. She loved her church and through her faith is sitting at the ride hand side of God. May God give you strength and his love during this time and in the days to come.
