Addie Rae Roberts Cook, 86, of 222 Devonway Street, passed away peacefully late Tuesday night, September 7, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held at 4 PM on Friday, September 10 (which would hav been her 87th birthday) at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with interment to follow at Overlook Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Alonzo Roberts and Emma Coward Roberts and nine brothers and sisters. Addie Rae was a native of Rockingham County and lived most of her life on the Cook Block in the Spray section of Eden before moving to the Central area. She retired from Eden City Schools after 30 years of service in the School Food Service Department as cafeteria manager. She will be remembered as the sweet lady who fed and took care of so many children at Central Elementary School and Holmes Junior High School. "Big Kids" recognized and spoke to her and told her how thankful they were for the famous peanut butter sandwiches, hot school-made rolls and yummy butterscotch squares. Addie was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church since she was a young girl and was still active with many church activities. She served on the Altar Guild for many years, served refreshments for children at Vacation Bible School, and organized many dinners for the church. Volunteering was a large part of her life. She and her husband, David, worked the front visitor desk at Morehead Memorial Hospital for 15 years. That "special team" was honored as Volunteers of the Year for 2010. She was involved in many other organizations through the years such as Spray Fire Department Auxiliary, Garden Club and a volunteer for the MR Church School transporting adults/children to that special Saturday school. Addie Rae is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, David Cook, Sr.; one son, David Cook, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Eden; three daughters, Dian Lovell and husband, Tom, Pamela Sexton and husband, Benny, and Sharon Frith of Stoneville; and close friend, Walter Ferguson of Eden. She is also survived by eight wonderful grandchildren, Sherry Tilley and husband, Darryl of Eden, Michele Roberts and husband, Kevin of Bowie, MD, Donna Prevost and husband, Ron of Concord, Lindy Lynn of Eden, Kenny Frith of Eden, Jonathan Cook of Kernersville, Richie Sexton and wife, Ashley of Thomasville, and Andy Cook and wife, Stephanie of Kernersville. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, Bray and Jason Tilley, Laura Jane and Lucas Lynn, Lindsay and Maddie Roberts, Dylan and Lauren Sexton, Ella Prevost, Kaylee and Karrington Cook. Her sister, Claudine Jones of Cascade, VA is her only surviving sibling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 600 Morgan Rd, Eden, NC 27288; Morehead Memorial Hospital, 117 E. Kings Hwy, Eden, NC 27288; or Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6 - 8 at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home.
