James Beasley Lamar, Jr., 74, of Kernersville, was released to the Lord our God on Sunday evening, November 20, 2011, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC after a long battle with heart and respiratory disease. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Monday, November 28, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel, 432 Boone Road in Eden. Burial will follow in Danview Cemetery, also in Eden. Jim was born July 9, 1937 in Leaksville, NC (now Eden), son of the late James B. Lamar, Sr. and his late wife, Mary Lily Hayden Lamar. He was a graduate of Tri-City High School, Class of 1956, and of NC State University, Class of 1964, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. He was a US Army veteran having served in Germany. He married Norma Jane Overby of Draper (now Eden), in 1968 and worked in textiles in Fieldale, VA and Columbus, GA. A few years later he started his own business with Snap-On Tools, which he enjoyed for many years before retiring. Jim was a true gentleman, a kind and caring man, a fine father figure to several young men, a loving and fun brother, and a loving and devoted husband to his late wife, Norma Jane. He will be missed. Surviving are his sisters, Gary Ann Lamar Fitts of Cascade, VA, Barbara Lamar Carrubba and husband, James of Baldwin, LI, NY, Patricia Lamar Hossenlopp and husband, John of Amagansett, LI, NY, Margaret Lamar Mauney and husband, Steve of Concord, NC, and brother-in-law, Joe Overby and wife, Debbie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jim's family wishes to acknowledge a special relationship that Jim and Norma had with their neighbors, the Shelton family, especially their sons, Drew, Derek and Darren, who Jim and Norma loved as their own. Also the Shelton's dog, "Maggie", who stayed by Jim's side day and night during Jim's last few months. The family will receive friends an hour and a half prior to the service (12:30 pm to 2 pm) on Monday at Fair Funeral Home. On Sunday, November 27, Jim's family will be at the home of his sister, Gary Ann Fitts, at 6660 Cascade Road in Cascade, VA. Guests are welcome to visit after 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to a charity or church of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.fairfuneralhome.com
My deepest sympathies to Gary Ann, Barbara, Pat, and Margaret at the death of their dearly loved brother Jim. My prayer is that God will bless each of you as you deal with his death. My prayer also is that the weather will break and that Barbara and Pat and their families will have no trouble getting flights out of New York for NC this weekend. Jim and I were friends in high school though he was a couple of years behind me. Again I say, God bless each of you. Jim Adkins

We are so sad to hear of Jim's passing, and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family. We lived and worked for Fieldcrest in Columbus, GA, and were good friends with Jim and Norma. Mary Lea also was a classmate and friend of hers at Morehead High School. As the obituary says, Jim was a true gentleman in every way.

Dear Norma and Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am grateful I was able to see Jim a few weeks ago at our high school class reunion. May God comfort and bring you peace during this difficult time.
