Mickey Walker Powell, 76, of 215 Taft Street, passed away Tuesday evening, March 8, 2011 at Morehead Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, March 11, at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Powell was born December 22, 1934 in Draper, son of the late Willie Brandeau and Vergie Hurd Powell. He was a US Army veteran and served in the US Army Reserves for 11 years. Mr. Powell was a member of First Baptist Church in Eden where he participated in the Men's Sunday School Class. In 1953 he graduated from Tri-City High School where he was an accomplished baseball player. Following high school Mr. Powell was a pitcher for the Draper YMCA team and later moved on to the Pittsburgh Pirates for a year and a half, then to Kansas City Athletics where he pitched for approximately a year and a half before suffering an injury which ended his baseball career. Mr. Powell retired from Centel / Sprint after 36 years of service as an installer and telephone lineman. In his private time he enjoyed deer and bear hunting as well as trout fishing. He was also a private pilot. Surviving is his wife of more than 55 years, Nancy Stovall Powell of the home; his only child, Mickey Walker Powell, Jr. of Eden, who was the light of his father's life; and sister-in-law, Dr. Judy Stovall Rivenbark and husband, Dr. William R. Rodgers, Jr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Julius and Lucinda Overby Powell and Sally Stultz Hurd and Jess Hurd. Dear Powell family, We are saddened to hear of the death of Mickey. He was a very friendly person, always stopping to share a kind word or a hunting story. He left a lasting impact on our family and we will miss him and his smile. Ken and Scott loved to talk to him about their hunting and fishing trips and they loved to hear his stories of his trips as well. Our hearts go out to you at this difficult time. I will never forget Mickey he was a wonderful man with a heart of gold.When I was young I worked at Dicks Drive in he came in alot. I was a single mom at that time raising a daughter. I did not have a washing machine in my home. He and his wife had bought a new machine. He brought it to my house and put it in for me. He would not let me pay him anything. I never forgot that remember what we leave behind about our self and how we treat other people are what really matters in life. I had not seen him in many years. My mother, Juanita Stewart, used to work with Mickey years ago when it was Central Telephone Co., also was a classmate from the 1953 class. She always thought he was a great person. I remember how nice he always was and always smiling and waving especially when he was on the front porch of his parents' house. My mother recently passed away also so now I am sure in heaven- they are probably recalling old times! Those happy memories of our loved ones along with God's help will help us to endure and get through this most difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Powell Family: Mickey was such a fine gentleman. He always had a smile on his face as he took his favorite seat under the balcony at First Baptist, Eden. When he worked at the telephone company, he installed my "own" telephone line in my bedroom. As a teenager, that was a big deal. Please know you all are in our thoughts and prayers. It was a real joy having Willie Vergie and Mickey for our neigbors on Stadium Drive for more than 50 years. They were always there if we needed them. I was impressed by the fact that Mickey came so often to check on his parents after marrying. They were so proud of their son. Rightfully so. Nancy and Mickey Jr, you are in our prayers.
