Caroline Shelton Horton, 82, of Bethlehem Church Road, passed away Tuesday evening, February 8, 2011 at Hospice Home in Wentworth. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, February 11, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Horton was born January 23, 1929 in Leaksville, NC, daughter of the late Luther and Lucy Shelton. She grew up in Stokes County. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Eden and a retiree of Fieldcrest Mills. Mrs. Horton loved spending time with her beloved family , enjoyed baking, quilting, and fishing at the Outer Banks. Surviving are her five sons, Marion Horton and wife, Martha of Eden, Randolph Horton and wife, Lesa of High Point, Mark Horton and wife, Laura of Wilkesboro, Roger Horton and wife, Susan of Reidsville, and Paul Horton and wife, Sarah of Madison; and eight grandchildren, Natalie, Sam, Mary, Jami, Cali, Haley, Jonah, and Charlie; her dear friend and neighbor, Lillie Hewitt; and her adopted son and fishing friend, Rob Gresham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Carl Randolph "Randy" Horton; and two sisters, Margaret Wall and Geneva Joyce. The family will receive friends Thursday evening 6 - 8 PM at Fair Funeral Home and on Friday, one hour prior to the service (1 - 2 PM). The family will gather, at other times, at the home, 1104 Bethlehem Church Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375. I only knew Caroline for 3 years and I only got to see her a few times, but I loved her. I knew I could leave my daughter (Sarah) in her care in America and she would take care of her. Karina and I send out our deepest heartfelt love to all of the Horton family. We will all miss Caroline and her laugh. We will remember her simple caring way. She was the rock behind keeping the boys in line growing up and making sure that things got done around the house. The lord gave us more time with her. She was a fighter because the doctors gave her 3 months to live and she beat ling cancer for 3+ years. Her will to live was incredible. I was glad that I was able to see her in November when I came home. She and I talked for over an hour about the boys (Roger, Paul, Marion, Randolph, Mark) and all the wives. We talked about the grand kids for over 30 minutes alone. She was glowing talking about them all because she was living for them. She was a SPECIAL lady and now is with Randy in heaven!
