Claude Hampton Smith, 83, passed away Monday evening, September 6, 2010 at Morehead Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, September 9, at Danview Cemetery in Eden. Mr. Smith was born July 27, 1927 in Rockingham County, son of the late Ernest and Kate Price Smith. He was a retiree of American Furniture after 44 years of service. Mr. Smith enjoyed helping his sisters and neighbors with anything they needed done. He had a knack for fixing things and working on lawn mowers. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Surviving are his sons, Donald Smith and Diane of Greensboro and Darren Smith and wife, Lisa of High Point; step-daughter, Berneva Rainey of Stoneville; and four grandchildren, DJ & Ashley Smith, Melissa Martin, and Jason Porter; sisters, Hazel Shafer and Becky Amos of Stoneville; sister-in-law, and Mary Jane Smith of Stoneville. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Thelma Hatcher Smith; and two brothers, Kenneth and Alton Smith. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service (10 - 11 am) on Thursday at Fair Funeral Home before proceeding to the cemetery.
