To the the Surber Family: My heart-felt condolences go out to your family. Having met your mom and grandma's very warm-hearted and kind son, Jeff, some years ago, I know your mom had to have been a fine lady to have raised such a person. Always cherish those memories [of her] in your heart. Sandra Winkler-Baltimore, MD

So sorry to read about Mrs. Surber's passing in the Martinsville Bulletin. My Dad, Buck Powell, lived at Spruce Village while your Mom was there. When she found out that my son, B.J., worked for Botetourt County and knew Carol and Jack, she was so pleased that she had that connection with Daddy and myself. Then Carol tells her that she also knows my other son, Will, from an EMT-E class that they took together. I don't think I ever mentioned to her that my sister and I were in the MHS Class of 1969 with her son. What a small world we live in. She was always so funny telling her jokes and stories. I know you will truly miss that, but I hope it also brings many smiles to your face everytime you remember one of her jokes. Take care and remember to stay in touch with each other.

Your Mother and Father were great influences on the young and older generations. We were very blessed to move next door to them in 1982. They both had a daily joke and a smile. Mary Sue loved to visit the creek! The amount of photos of the triplets were endless! She was very much a wonderful lady and blessed our lives! Mary Sue Smith Surber was loved and admired by many people. Love, Pam Morley Joyce
