Bettye was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on May 19th, 1925 and entered into her rest on November 16th, 2020 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her first years were spent in the care of the North Carolina Children’s Home Society where it is written in her records that she was “the most beautiful child they’d ever seen”. She was adopted from the Home at the age of three by Mary Gunn Jones of Leaksville (now Eden, North Carolina). There she was properly raised, together with her sister, the late Louise Jones.

Bettye’s life was changed forever when a Mississippi boy by the name of Hicks met her while selling Bibles for a summer job. What with Bettye’s looks and Hicks’ dancing skills, they fell in love and were promptly married. They stayed that way, in love, and as those of us who knew them know, their love for each other was the warp and woof of their lives to the very end. At the end, Hicks Anderson Jr. preceded his bride to heaven by three years. At the beautiful age of ninety-five, Bettye has joined him there for one more dance, one that goes on forever.

Bettye will be remembered as an uncommonly selfless woman, filled with humor, and adored by her far-flung family. She loved Carolina basketball, wildly cheering her team from a chair planted exactly three feet in front of her TV set. She loved her friends. She loved to travel, England-in-bloom her all-time favorite. She loved hosting Bible studies in her living room, always gracious, always accommodating. But most of all she loved the Lord and her family, and they loved her. It is especially there, in her family, that her memory will live on. And for that memory we her family are most very grateful.

Bettye is survived by her son Hicks “Andy” Anderson III of Fletcher, NC, daughter Mary Anderson of Allardt, TN, daughter Barbara Shore and husband Jim of Winston-Salem, NC, daughter Libby Eifert and husband Brian of Wenatchee, WA, nineteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and Alice Hundley, with whom she shared a cherished lifelong friendship.

Thoughts and prayers for you all during this time of sorrow. I have childhood memories of having dinner with your dear family as Mary was my friend. Your mother was so sweet. In 5th grade I recall assembly at Leaksville Intermediate School. Your dad gave us all a copy of the New Testament; a small little book with a green cover. I circled one of the verses he spoke of: Romans 10:9. Powerful and special memory. With appreciation to both of your dear parents. Prayers for your family.
