Lena Hamrick Murphy passed away peacefully at her home at 164 Wesley Place, Bassett, Virginia on February 2,2020 at the age of 70.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 4 from 5pm – 7pm, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden, NC. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Lena’s life.

Lena was born on September 7, 1949 in Eden, North Carolina to Evelyn and Aubrey Hamrick. She is a graduate of Morehead High School in Eden, North Carolina.

Lena had a deep love for her husband Thomas, animals, water and knowledge. She would enjoy the fact that she passed away on a date that is also the first palindrome in over 900 years (02/02/2020). Lena worked most recently with the local animal shelter to include fostering many infant animals.

Lena is survived by her husband, Thomas Murphy of Bassett, Virginia; brother, David Hamrick of Eden, NC; sister, Kay Shumpert of Surfside, SC; and step-son, Bobby Murphy of Bassett, VA.

Lena will be remembered for being a good friend, an avid horsewoman, a talented water skiier, and an animal rescue/rehabber. She took good care of people too. Lena was an honest woman and always shot from the hip; she didn't sugar coat things. She once told me that "life was messy and to jump in with both feet." When I saw her last she said, "it is what it is." Lena had a big heart and was larger than life. She left us too soon. I will surely miss her.
