Saying goodbye is never easy. Yesterday I had to say goodbye to a truly amazing woman. France and my grandpa were widowers when they met in the mid 90s. When Papa started dating in his late 70s it seemed weird until we met Frances. She was just stunning inside and out. In seconds we all knew that they had already fallen in love. My Papa glowed when he looked at her. They always held hands they laughed, danced, they went on long drives with the top down, had picnics, went on trips, they had the best time together. Our families became one we all loved her. She treated my mom and her siblings like her own. Frances was so kind and always happy in the 25 plus years I’ve known her, she never was sad or upset always positive, glowing and loving. She was also one of the most put together women, fashionable is not a big enough word to describe how impeccably dressed she always was. From her shoes to her jewelry, always stunning. Even in the past few years in the nursing home she would be dressed to the nines. On my honeymoon in 98 I got word that Papa and Frances snuck off in his convertible went to the beach and eloped!! She was 73 he was 78. They had such a beautiful relationship. My papa lit up everytime she was near him. For the years they were together seeing them was like seeing teenagers in love. They just sparkled together. Sadly my Papa died suddenly from a stroke only 2.5 years after they married. Even through the sadness that Frances had losing her second love she was just worried about all of us. Her heart was just so big and loving. Frances had two great loves her first husband James who died suddenly quite young. Her second love was papa also a James. She was a lucky lady she had two great James’ in her life. She would share stories about Jim and we shared stories about my Grandmother. Frances embraced my mom and her siblings and all of us grandkids and great grandkids like her own. She became like another mom especially for my mom and her sister Peggy. Over the years since my Papa died I would go visit Frances and she would greet me and the girls with a touch on the cheek and a “hello gorgeous” or a “look at you sweet girls” We would talk about the adventures she had with Papa . She would start the stories usually touching your hand and say “ oh that handsome James” as if he was standing right beside her listening. I like to think he was. She was never sad talking about him, they had nothing but great times in their few short years, they made the absolute most of every minute. In her last few years her mind was slipping. She didn’t always remember us but she would greet us all the same way she always had. Whenever I left from visits she would touch my cheek or give my hand a squeeze and say “I love you”. Goodnight Miss Frances You had 94 great years touching so many lives Thank you for loving all of us. I hope Frances, James, her son Jim my Papa and Mema are all having a grand time together.
