Wilber June Turner, age 68, Lovingly known as “Peanut”, went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 25th, 2019 surrounded by his family.

A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 in Fair Funeral Home Chapel with military honors provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Rockingham County Veteran’s Honor Guard, of which he was a proud member.  The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 – 8 pm at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Peanut, the 14th of 15 children was born on July 28, 1950 in Ridgeway, Virginia to the late Robert Lee and Iris Purdy Turner.  He learned the importance of community and the value of hard work as a child on his parent’s small farm. Mr. Turner proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during two tours in Vietnam and later found company being with his friends at VFW Post # 2574.  He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans chapter 63 and Peanut continued remembering his brothers at arms through his work in the honor guard. Peanut enjoyed a 38 year career driving for Georgia Pacific and retired in 2007. During his tenure at GP, Mr. Turner stood up for those who needed him by serving as President of their union. Devoted to God, Peanut was member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church in Eden, NC. He enjoyed the gospel classics and would sing for his church on occasion.

Peanut is survived by his wife, Mary Vernon Turner; his children, Chad Turner (Stephanie), Nicole Harris (Jerry), Janet Hooker (George), and Bradley Cardwell (Anna). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as “Papa Peanut Butter”, Ashley Carter, Kayla Pasquariello, Jesse Turner, Claudia Cooke, Jett Hooker, Dakota Hooker, Jack Cardwell, Kennedy Harris, Sydney Cardwell, Salem Cardwell, and Elenore Harris; one great-grandchild, Ashlyn Galloway; his sisters Myrtle Turner, Mable McBride, Susan Beige and Beatrice Haskins; and his brothers, Billy Turner, Lloyd Turner, and Joseph Turner.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Dewey Turner, Douglas Turner, Donald Turner, Vivian Knott, Dorothy Turner, Margaret Turner, Francis Lawrence, and Estelle Worley.
