Obituary For Grady Elwood Stewart
July 19, 1921 - October 22, 2012


Grady Elwood Stewart, 91, of Mayodan, died Monday morning, October 22, 2012 at Morehead Memorial Hospital, Eden.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Stoneville. Internment will follow at Stoneville Municipal Cementary.

Mr. Stewart was a native of Iredell County and the son of the late David L. Stewart and Bertha Travis Stewart. He was a combat veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater.

A lifelong educator in Rockingham County, Mr. Stewart was a passionate advocate for public education his entire life. Following his graduation from Lenoir Rhyne College (now University), Mr. Stewart began his career in as an English teacher at Stoneville High School. He later received his masters from Appalachian State University.

Mr. Stewart served for many years as principal of the Huntsville School in the Ellisboro Community, and served briefly as principal of Granite Falls High School. He later served as a Distributive Education and vocational education teacher in the Madison-Mayodan school system.

Among his many civic and public service activities, Mr. Stewart served on the Stoneville Town Council, as a member of the Stoneville Rotary Club, the Madison-Mayodan Lions Club, and as a charter member of the Stoneville Lions Club. He also served as an adult leader in the Cherokee Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Nolen Stewart. Survivors include his son, David Phillip Stewart, an attorney in Raleigh.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.
