Obituary For Elizabeth Ogburn
August 1, 1915 - July 6, 2012


Elizabeth Barker Ogburn, 96, of 302 Kennedy Street died Friday, July 6, 2012 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden.

. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 11 at 11:00am at First Baptist Church in Eden with Pastor Craig Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Lawson Cemetery.

She was born August 1, 1915 to Thomas Hays Barker and Daisy King Barker in Leaksville, NC. After attending Hollins College in VA, she graduated in 1935 from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC.

Mrs. Ogburn was Secretary-Treasurer of Twin City Wholesale Grocery Company and Firestone Tire and Appliance Center, and President of Orange Crush Bottling Company and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Asheville.

She also served on the NCNB Board of Directors, was President and Director Emeritus of the Rockingham Community College Foundation Board, President of the Meredith College Alumnae Board, and organized a Rockingham County chapter.

Mrs. Ogburn was President of the Leaksville-Spray History Club, President of the Leaksville Garden Club, President of Junior Service League, Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution (George Reynolds Chapter), and was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also Co-Chairman of the Bicentennial Commission for Rockingham County and served on the Publications committee for A Tale of Three Cities.

She was a member of the Preservation Society and on the State Selection Committee for the Terpsichorean Club. She served on the Fieldcrest Scholarship Committee and was Treasurer of District 7 Federated Women‚àö¬¢‚Äö?ᬮ‚Äö?묢s Club, as well as a member of the Executive Committee for the League of Women Voters.

In addition, Mrs. Ogburn was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Eden for 88 years where she was Director and President of the WMU, deacon, choir member, and a Sunday school teacher for 50 years.

Mrs. Ogburn was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Robert Glenn Ogburn, Sr., her brothers Thomas Hays Barker and Francis King Barker, and sister Evelyn Barker Hawkins.

She is survived by two sons: R. Glenn Ogburn, Jr. and Thomas Lanier Ogburn and his wife, Carol, of Eden; one daughter, Peyton Ogburn Cherry and her husband, James, also of Eden; five grandchildren: Robert Glenn Ogburn, III, and his wife, Jennifer; Lanie Ogburn Little and her husband, Kent; Kevin Kerr Ogburn and his wife, Charity; James Ashley Cherry and his wife, Melissa; and Brittain King Cherry and his wife, Lauren. She has one great-grandson, Hays Ogburn Cherry and one great-granddaughter, Caroline Elizabeth Ogburn.

Visitation will be at First Baptist Church, Tuesday, July 10 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. At other times, the family will receive guests at the home of her daughter at 546 Southwood Drive, Eden.
