Obituary For Daniel Walter Squires



Daniel Walter Squires, 89, of 1416 Fieldcrest Road, passed away Sunday afternoon, February 7, 2010 at Morehead Nursing Center in Eden. A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, February 10, at First United Methodist Church of Draper. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. A native of Rockingham County, Mr. Squires was born May 13, 1920, son of the late Walter J. and Donna Stovall Squires. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Draper and was elected their Man of the Year in 1986. He was a retiree of Fieldcrest Mill. Mr. Squires was a very active member of his community having been an original member of the first Eden City Council and continued to serve from 1975 - 1999. He served twice as Mayor Pro-tem. Mr. Squires was a charter member of the Draper Y's Men's Club and went on to be named their Man of the Year in 1960 and again in 1992; he was a representative to Triad Council of Governments (Piedmont region), and was an inductee to the Eden YMCA Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. In addition to his civic duties he performed with the Fieldcrest Quartet and the Fieldcresters. Mr. Squires was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran, serving his country from 1941 - 1945. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Francis Squires; sons, Daniel W. Squires, Jr. and wife, Carla of Raleigh, and Gary L. Squires of Atlanta, GA; brother, Ervin (Lynn) Squires of Houston, TX; sister, Ruth Minter of Eden; one graddaughter, Lynlee Ruth Craig and husband Chris of Winston-Salem; and two great-granddaughters, Emma Ruth and Oliva Mason Craig, of Winston-Salem. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil, Harold and Merritt Squires.
