Obituary For Gertrude Hankins Wilson



Gertrude Hankins Wilson, passed away on Sunday Morning at the home of her daughter in Vinton, Va . A graveside service will be held 11 am Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Reidsville. Born in Henderson, NC on September 10, 1914, Mrs. Gertrude Delmas Hankins Wilson was 96 years old. She was a resident of Leaksville NC, (now Eden, NC) from 1917 until 1956. Gertrude was a graduate of Leaksville High School and The Elizabeth Whitnall School of Music where she majored in piano and harmony. She taught piano in Eden for several years and completed a program in business education, after which she was recruited by the Navy Department and went to work in Washington, D.C.. Gertrude participated in a wide variety of programs while working for the government. In the Navy she worked on land, sea and air transportation projects, military foreign assistance programs, and the development of the Defense Department's "Single Manager System." In the FDA, she participated in many varied and interesting programs such as the direction of the then new drug application review process and the initiation of the Drug Efficacy Study in liason with the National Academy of Sciences. Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Nona W. Bridge, her brother, Roscoe C. Hankins, two grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.fairfuneralhome.com
