Reverend John Gaylord Dix, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend of many left his earthly home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 15th after a brief illness.  Even during his last days, he was spreading God’s word to doctors, nurses, and all who were around him, comforting them as they were trying to comfort him.

A  funeral service to celebrate Gaylord’s life will take place on Sunday, July 18th at 3:00 at Trinity Baptist Church at 9904 US Highway 150 in Reidsville.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Reidsville.

Gaylord as he was known, was born in Leaksville (now Eden), North Carolina to his parents William

Thomas (WT) and Vergie Dix.  During his high school years, he met the love of his life, Peggy Sherwood.  They were married in June of 1959, and they recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.  And even after all those years, they still acted like newlyweds!

After running a small chain of men’s clothing stores for a number of years, Gaylord worked for 16 years with Western-Southern Life Insurance Company.  However, his true calling was always the ministry.  Even while working full time, he conducted revivals at local churches and served as interim pastor for Beaver Island Baptist Church for a few years. 

Then, after retiring from the insurance business, he moved on to the role he was destined to fill…being a full-time minister.  For 32 years Gaylord served as the pastor for Trinity Baptist Church in Reidsville, retiring in May of this year.  And while he toyed with the idea of retiring the last few years, he just couldn’t as he loved the congregation as much as they loved him!

In addition to his beloved wife, Gaylord leaves behind sons Tim and Todd, daughter in law Tracy, and four grandchildren (Christian, Robert, Hannah, and Ryan).  He was preceded in death by his daughter in law Catherine.

His family would like to express their thanks for the fine staffs at Annie Penn Hospital, Moses Cone Hospital, and especially Camden Place in Greensboro and Hospice of Rockingham County.
