Obituary For Rebecca Pender Carter



Rebecca Pender Carter, 86, of 717 Bryant Street passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 at Morehead Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. A funeral service will be held at 4 PM on Thursday, May 20, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Overlook Cemetery. The family will gather at The Fair Home, 420 Boone Road immediately following the service. Mrs. Carter, the fourth of eight children, was born January 20, 1924 in Spray, NC, daughter of the late C. Marshall and Willie Lou Duncan Pender. She was a 1940 graduate of Leaksville High School and a 1942 Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, NC. A life-long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Florence Nightingale Class and sang in the choir for over 50 years. Following her education, Mrs. Carter was employed at the General Office of Fieldcrest Mills for a number of years. Surviving are her two children, Cecile Carter of the home, and Bruce Carter and wife, Anita of Axton, VA; one grandson, Dakota Haines Carter; and sisters, Norma Pender Parker of Eden and Azile Pender Lemons of Reidsville; special cousin, Mary Donaho Neal; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Lee Carter; brother, Phillip Marshall Pender; sisters, Constance Pender Buck, Marie Pender Willard, Eliza Pender Jennings and most recently, Alma Pender Fair. The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to the staff of the emergency department and 2nd Floor ICU of Morehead Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, 6 - 8 PM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and other times at the home on Bryant Street.
