Nellie Harrison Chambers Benner, 94, of 302 S. Kennedy Street, passed away Thursday morning, December 15, 2011 at Arbor Ridge in Eden. A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, December 22, at Monticello Memory Garden in Charlottsville, VA. A native of Rockingham County, Mrs. Benner was born March 26, 1917. She was the daughter of the late James Alvesta Chambers and Mary Ida Wray Chambers. Mrs. Benner was a volunteer with the USO during World War II. She later continued her involvement with the US military working with the US Navy Department and US State Department before retiring in 1965. Her husband, Paul Fletcher Benner was also a US Marine, serving his country as a pilot. They travelled to many parts of the country during their marriage. He preceded her in death in 1980. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the local Disabled American Veterans, 342 Cherokee Camp Road, Wentworth, NC 27375.
