Grace Holton Atkins, 87, died on October 4, 2011 at Well-Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro, NC. A memorial service followed by interment will be held at the Church of the Epiphany in Eden, NC on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Afterwards the family will receive friends in the Atkins Chapel at the church. Mrs. Atkins was born on November 4, 1923 in Easton, Maryland to the late Mr.& Mrs. William Layton Holton, Jr. of Centreville, MD. She graduated from Centreville High School and attended Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, VA. Her beauty and charm earned her the title of ‚Äö?Ñ?ªMiss Centreville‚Äö?Ñ‚àû at the age of 16. These characteristics remained with her throughout her lifetime. In 1942 she married George Albert Atkins in the church where they had met four years earlier in Centreville. After his service in the US Navy during World War II they settled in Richmond, VA. In the following years they lived in Elizabeth City, NC and Salisbury, NC before moving to Eden, NC in 1968. While in Eden, Mrs. Atkins was an active member of the Church of the Epiphany and a volunteer for Morehead Memorial Hospital. An avid reader, she shared her love of books with her children and enjoyed many years of membership in the Border Book Club. Her husband preceded Mrs. Atkins in death in 2009 and she moved to Well-Spring Retirement Community in 2010. A woman of quiet determination, she faced the challenges of her declining years with courage, dignity and grace. People were endeared to her because of the courtesy and kindness she always demonstrated to others. Her family wishes to express its gratitude to her exceptional caregivers and staff at Well-Spring and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. She is survived by daughters, Cynthia Atkins Uzzell and husband Randy, Linda Atkins Strong and husband Jim, and son, David George Atkins and wife Donna. She is also survived by four granddaughters: Sharon Uzzell Pringle and husband Greg, Jennifer Holton Uzzell and fianc‚àö¬© Bob Bowen, Katharine Atkinson Quince and husband Matt, and Mary Layton Atkinson and fianc‚àö¬© Tim Paulson. Twin great grandchildren Andrew and Caroline Pringle also survive Mrs. Atkins and were the light of her life. To Grace's family. What a wonderful, remarkable lady that Grace was. I really got to know Grace personally in the late 80's when I took over as Organist/Choirmaster at Church of the Epiphany. She was so graceful, just like her name. Before your dad died, I always took the choir caroling at Christmas. We would go to the back patio and we would sing our hearts out. She loved this. I often sat beside Grace and Bert during the sermon time each Sunday. I loved both of them dearly. They were my very best friends. I love them and miss them both. May God be your source of comfort and strength during the difficult days and months ahead. Grace is at peace now with Bert. I will be keeping you all in my prayers. Much love to all of you.......... Grace and George were two of the most righteous people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing in my life. I have nothing but very fond memories of them both as a child in Church of the Epiphany and as I got older when we were "backyard neighbors" until I moved to Boston for College. I cannot ever remember an occasion when I was not happy to see them. They did so much for the Church and my family and the community in general and I can only hope that I achieve (if I'm lucky) a small percent of their wonderfulness. I consider myself VERY lucky to have know Grace and George and been neighbors and friends. I offer my condolences for you loss.

We are so sorry not to have been able to attend the funeral of our dear friend and fellow Border Book Club member--I have just had minor surgery and could not get there. We do send our heartfelt sympathy to the family at the loss of their mother, as well as their father, Bert, some years ago. Marianne Aiken
