Gardie Guffey Coats, 80, of 128 Drumheller Ct., passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 9, 2011 at her home with family by her side. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, August 12, at Horsepasture Christian Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Coats was born November 22, 1930 in Spindale, NC, daughter of the late John W. and Juanita Goode Guffey. She was a former member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Denver, NC and a current member of Spray Baptist Church in Eden. Mrs. Coats was the manager of Three Sisters Clothing Stores for 20+ years and later opened Gardie's Fashions in Denver, NC. She later retired from Cowans Ford Country Club in Cornelius where she worked as a financial secretary. Surviving are her two daughters, Marie Ballance and husband, Archie, and Glennette Haga and husband, Jerry; three grandsons, Christopher Hodges, Jonathan Haga, and Andrew Haga; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hodges, Somer Hodges, and Katherine Haga; brothers Robert W. Guffey and wife, Muriel of San Carlos, CA and Hal Michael Guffey and wife, Jolene of Rutherforton, NC; and sister, Pamela Gail Davis and husband, James of Mooresboro, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Glenn Coats in April of this year; and sister, Hiawathia Guffey. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6 - 8 PM at Horsepasture Christian Church and other times at the residence. However, you may come by Fair Funeral Home Thursday afternoon between the the hours of 2 pm and 4:30 pm before moving to the church to pay your respects. Memorial contributions may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, 2nd floor, Bethesda, MD 20814; Horsepasture Christian Church, 1146 Horsepasture Price Road, Ridgeway, VA 24148; or Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375. Dear Gardie Coats Family, I want to give my sincerest condolences along with our church at Spray Baptist Church in the passing of Gardie. We know that she was a dedicated person to her family and church. Our church will miss her. We will be praying for each of you at this most difficult time.
