John was a brain and an intellectual, as you would expect of a man with a PhD in Philosophy, aa aPhi Beta Kappa key and other honors. But he was also a down-to--earth philosopher who managed to "manage" when life provided some bad bumps. His work with Quaker groups for Equal Rights and in registering Afirican Americans at a time when some were being injured and killed for doing that work was important to the nation and to the progress we made in Civil Rights.

John and I were friends since 1983. Over the years we shared some holidays, an occasional trip, many laughs and a few sorrows. I will miss his quick wit, conversation and warmth. I will miss him. May you Rest In Peace, John. You will always have a place in my heart
