Judy Whitaker White

January 23, 1946 - August 4, 2017

Judy Whitaker White of Eden passed away on Friday morning, August 4, 2017 in her home with family by her side after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.  Born January 23, 1946, she lived with a “keep your head up and get it done” attitude.

A service will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, August 6 at First Baptist Church, 533 Greenwood Street in Eden, officiated by Pastor Craig Bowman of First Baptist and Pastor A.C. Brock of Leaksville United Methodist.  Entombment will follow in Overlook Mausoleum.  The family will receive visitors on Saturday evening, from 6-8 pm at Fair Funeral Home, and other times at the home, 304 Meadowview Lane in Eden.

She is survived by her sons Ken (Amy) and Wally, her grandsons Hanson and Larson, her niece Wendy Moser, and her many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who have offered such amazing support.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years Kenneth “Gray” White, her parents Walsey and Myrtle Whitaker, her brother and sister-in-law Wendell and Monette Whitaker, her sister Edith “Pat” Myers, her nephew Jimmy Myers, as well as many others from her large family of which she was the youngest.

Judy graduated from Surry Central High School in 1964 with her married name on her diploma having married Gray on June 9, 1962.  They moved to Leaksville from Dobson in late 1966, and opened a dry cleaners in March 1967.  One Hour Martinizing became A Cleaner World and is still serving Eden 50 years later as Zibbys Cleaners.  Scotty’s Janitorial and Carpet Cleaning was co-founded by Gray and Judy with Quesell Scott Jr.  That business also continues on today as the two businesses, Scotty’s Carpet and Oriental and Cleanco.  As managers of Meadow Greens Shopping Center, Gray and Judy enjoyed organizing craft fairs, antique car shows, and other community events.  She was an avid exerciser, inspiring many to come to the gym because they knew she’d be there even after it required two oxygen tanks to do it.  Supporting charities such as Hospice of Rockingham County, Road to Recovery, and  the Lynn Smith Memorial Scholarship were very important to her.  After Gray passed in 1998, she partnered with the Salvation Army to create a Senior Angel Tree.  In lieu of flowers, she asked that people help that project continue by sending a check marked for “Senior Angel Tree ONLY” to Salvation Army, 704 Barnes St., Reidsville, NC 27320.

Lastly, she said, “My faith and my daily morning devotions have been a key to the peacefulness that I had, along with classes on meditation and yoga, and the many friends who have always been there by my side.”
