John Leon “Jack” West, Jr., 89, of 114 Country Club Drive in Eden, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.  A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, July 29, at Leaksville United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jack was born December 8, 1927 in Pender County, NC to the late John West, Sr. and Mary Gratiot West. Jack served in the US Marine Corps in Camp Lejeune, NC and in Bremerton, Washington.  He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in textile engineering and was a respected plant manager for many years at Fieldcrest Mills. He married the love of his life, Sue, on March 1, 1952.  He taught adult Sunday school classes for years at Leaksville Methodist Church where he was a faithful member.  He was also a member of the Order of the Masons.  Jack was a lover of the outdoors, exercise, and the game of golf.  He gave selflessly to his family and friends all of his life.

Jack often said that his favorite years in life were the times he spent with his grandchildren, Andy and Mary, who lovingly called him “Papa.” In his later years, he enjoyed daily walks and coffee times with his friends.  The last 5 years of his wife’s life, he devoted his time as her caretaker and companion – no other husband could have been more devoted than he.  We have lost a father, a grandfather, a brother, an uncle, a friend, but heaven has gained a gentle soul, pure of heart.  Let us rejoice that he is now at peace with his beloved angel and wife Sue, eternally.

In addition to his parents, preceding him in death are his wife, Sue, and his beloved sister, Marcia Nevitt.

Surviving are son, Mike West of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Mary Ferrell and husband Graham from Boone, NC; sister, Margie Joyner of Cummings, GA. and brother, Charles West of Ocala, FL.

So sorry to hear this. We met John a few years ago while walking at the mall. For quite a while we would walk with him and listen to the stories he would tell. We had a tremendous amount of respect for him and Sue.
