Helen Walthall Sumpter, 87, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at Brian Center of Eden.

A funeral service will be held at 4 PM on Saturday, January 28, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend A. C. Brock officiating.  A private burial will be held at a later time.

Mrs. Sumpter was born February 1, 1929 in Campbell County, Virginia, to the late Elwood Grey Walthall and Stella Stowers Walthall.  She was a long-time member of Leaksville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her four children, Steve Sumpter and wife, Marilyn of Wake Forest, Sharon Sumpter Pace of Steamboat Springs, CO, Susan Sumpter Richardson and husband, Richie of Stoneville, and Ginger Sumpter Booker and husband, Randy of Burlington;  seven grandchildren, Adam Richardson, Trae Richardson, Courtney Bindi, Jerry Jenkins, III, Trevor Booker, Erin Jenkins, and Reid Booker;  five great-grandchildren;  sisters, Zada Crews and Ruth Frazier, both of Lynchburg, VA;  and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Sumpter, Jr.;  son, Chuck Sumpter;  sister, Shirley Pulley;  son-in-law, H. C. Pace, III;  and daughter-in-law, Lynn Rickman Sumpter.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service (3 - 4 PM) at Fair Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375 or to the Alzheimers Association, Western NC Division, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
