Richard Kemper Mitchell, 74, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2017. 

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, January 14, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Mitchell was born October 3, 1942 in Danville, VA, to the late Joseph "Tojo" Mitchell and Daisy Wilson Mitchell.  He was the owner of Ty's Towing Company in Madison and a retiree of American Tobacco Company.    He was very caring and always willing to help someone.  He was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by his daughter, Brooksye Mitchell Athauda and husband, Ambassador Buddhi Athauda of Fairfax, VA;  son, Tyler Mitchell and wife, Michelle of Madison;  four grandchildren, Ruvini Athauda, Keerthi Athauda, Kieran Athauda, and Joseph Mitchell; and four siblings, Jack Mitchell and wife, Gail of Germantown, TN, Kay Burnette, Susie Roberts, and Mike Mitchell, all of Eden.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ramsey Mitchell.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Rockingham County EMS, the Madison Police Department, and the NC Highway Patrol.

Visitation will be held Friday evening, 7 - 9 PM, at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, Tyler Mitchell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rockingham County Animal Shelter, 250 Cherokee Camp Rd, Reidsville, NC 27320.

Mitchell family, So sorry for your loss Richard was a good man he helped me and my mom with so many tows and yet never over charged us not once he was honest and caring and we really thought a lot of him and I loved him picking at me and carrying on if he didn't I thought something was wrong . Ty and Brooksie I know that you will miss him so much. He was always a good friend and neighbor to my family. After my daddy passed away he helped my mom out so much I couldn't thank him enough. He always kept an eye out for her too.

To the family - so sorry for your loss. The community lost a great man. I will miss Richard and the great conversations. My dad would look for the tow truck and if he could find Richard out at breakfast, that is where dad had breakfast. He was a hard working man who cared about people and showed that. He will be remembered always.
