Patricia Elaine Holt Colvin, 78, of 124 West Lake Road, Eden, NC passed away during the early morning hours of October 18, 2016 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, NC after a brief illness.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 11 AM at Overlook Cemetery.

Elaine was born on November 19, 1937 to the late Roy Ray Holt and the late Arlene Barbee Holt of Albemarle, NC. Elaine graduated from Albemarle High School in 1956 and proceeded to receive an Associate in Arts degree from Wingate Junior College in 1956 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pfeiffer College in 1960. After graduation, Elaine was offered and accepted the position of Librarian with John Motley Morehead High School in Eden, NC. One of her first library assistants was Lawrence Weldon Cox, who went on to become mayor of Eden. Weldon introduced her to his cousin, Tommy Colvin, and the rest as they say was history. Tommy and Elaine married on August 4, 1963 and continued to make Eden their home. Two daughters followed, Kimberly Layne in 1967 and Kristin Leigh in 1972, along with a menagerie of canine children who most always took precedence: Fuzz, Princess, Taylor, Roo, Atticus, and Malcolm. Tom and Elaine enjoyed travelling, and their favorite destinations were Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach. Elaine was most often a golf widow on the weekends, but that was okay because she could enjoy her favorite hobby which was reading; a book was never far from her reach. She also enjoyed all things associated with the Morehead Panthers, the NC State Wolfpack, the Atlanta Braves, and the Washington Redskins, although Kim and Kristin managed to convert her to a Carolina Panthers fan during the last 10 years. When Tommy passed away in 1998, she continued to enjoy life as well as she could, and became a fiercely independent woman. She was fortunate enough to be able to travel to Germany, Alaska, and Italy and thoroughly enjoyed each experience. All of that was forgotten, however, when her two grandchildren came along, Madison in 2003 and Morgan in 2005. Grammie loved them dearly, and she was so proud of their academic accomplishments. She also loved her two cats and two dogs, Callie, Zoe, Kady, and Maci. It is not surprising that both her grandchildren and her pets were spoiled rotten.

Elaine was the Librarian/Media Specialist at John Motley Morehead High School for 39 years. This is where she probably became most well known and was able to touch so many lives. Everywhere she went, former students would come up to her, and she always remembered every single one either by name, by face, or both. Elaine belonged to Alpha Delta Kappa sorority and was a member of Thursday Study Club at the time of her death. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was a former choir member.

Elaine is survived by her daughters, Kim Jordan and husband Tommie of Rock Hill, SC and Kristin Gregory and husband Brad of Walnut Cove, NC; two grandchildren, Madison Jordan of Rock Hill, SC and Morgan Gregory of Walnut Cove, NC; a niece, several nephews, and several cousins. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by husband, Thomas Colvin of Eden, NC and brother, Gerald Holt of Albemarle, NC.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 21 from 6-8 PM at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the Colvin residence at 124 West Lake Road, Eden, NC 27288.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Paul Sasser for taking such great care of our Mom over the years, the employees of Chaney’s Restaurant for their support, and to the Holly Hills neighbors for all of their support and assistance.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Eden Animal Shelter, 1027 Rhodes Rd., Eden, NC 27288 or to the Rockingham Humane Society, 205 Boone Rd., Eden, NC 27288.

As a new teacher at Morehead High School in the late 80's, your mother was one of the first to welcome me and make me feel comfortable at a new school. She was a gracious lady. I missed seeing her when she retired. My deepest sympathies to you all.

Kim and Kristin, Your Mother helped a lot of young people READ, and that helped them prepare for a better life. I knew her as a friend at church. God Bless you as you learn to live with her memory.

I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Colvin all the four years I was in high school. She was a wonderful and very sweet lady. After I graduated I saw her from time to time. She was one of my teachers but also a dear friend and I will miss her.
