John Walter Self, age 95 formerly of Greenway Drive, Eden passed away on Monday morning, October 3, 2016 at Jacobs Creek Nursing and Rehab Center.

A funeral service will be held 1 pm Saturday, October 8th at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Overlook Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by the Rockingham County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12 till 1 pm.

Mr. Self was born November 7, 1920 in the Leaksville section of Eden to the late Royal Silas Self and Minnie Bryant Self.  He was a WWII U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran and served in the China-Burma-Indian theater of war. He retired from Fieldcrest Mills and worked in the Engineering Department. John was an avid golfer at the former Meadows Greens Country Club. He was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death along with his parents by his wife, Jane Nelson Self; sons, Roy Self and Marty Self; brothers, Lee and Frank Self; sisters, Eva S. Neal and Kathryn S. Broadwell; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Self.

Surviving are son, John Self-Medlin and wife Brenda of Gainesville, FL, daughter, Debby Self Scott and husband Gary of Warsaw, NC; sister, Gladys Frederick of Texas; daughter-in-law, Sandra Burnett Self of Eden; 5 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren, numerous great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be offered to St. Lukes Episcopal Church, 600 Morgan Road, Eden, NC 27288

Dear John, I enjoyed knowing your Dad at Fieldcrest. He seemed always to be happy and he sure loved his family, golf and coffee.
