Marie West Combs, age 89, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully on January 28, 2016 at Trinity Elms in Clemmons, NC. She was born on May 15, 1926, in Vesta, VA and lived most of her married life in Eden, NC. In 1948 she married William Brantley Combs and was blessed with one daughter, Janice Combs.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Combs will be held at First United Methodist Church of Draper on Sunday, January 31 at 2pm with The Reverend Sue Anne Morris officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Danview Cemetery.

She was born to the late Andrew Bennett West and Emma Hall West. She graduated from Meadows of Dan High School in Virginia. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, and genuinely lived her faith.

Marie's greatest joys in life were getting together with family, planting and tending her flower garden, her lifelong friend Shirley Freeman, and after 2004 sharing a home with her best friend/daughter Janice.  Her soft-spoken demeanor disguised a sharp wit but more readily apparent were her kindness, generosity and truly affectionate nature.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, William Brantley Combs, brothers; Jesse, Bud, and Glidewell West, and sister Mildred West Martin.

Mrs. Combs is survived by her daughter, Janice Marie Combs of Winston-Salem, NC; younger sister Lucy West Cruise of Vesta, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Trinity Elms for her care.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1-2pm at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 130 N. Main St, Eden, NC 27288; or to the Alzheimer's Association, http://www.alz.org.   Online condolences may be sent by visiting fairfuneralhome.com

I am thinking a lot of you now, Janice. You were a loving & true daughter who did everything possible to provide a safe & loving home for your mom as soon as it was clear that she could not live alone. You worked your care for her around your job, home maintenance & health issues for the both of you. I would wish to have such a giving, caring daughter in my life. I'm proud you are my friend

Janice, my deepest condolences to you upon the loss of your dear sweet Mother. She and I would visit some when she was at Morehead Nursing Center before she moved to Winston to be with you. My Mom was there also, Juanita Stewart. Your Mom always had such a sweet spirit and always smiling-I know you will miss her but hold close those special memories and she will always be with you. Lean on the Lord for peace, strength, comfort, and direction in the days that follow. Love and prayers.
