"Karen suffered from phenylketonuria (PKU), while there is no cure for PKU, treatment can prevent intellectual disabilities and other health problems. By the time Karen was a toddler it was evident something was happening with her and through some testing they discovered she had PKU. By this time Karen had already suffered mental health problems. Karen functioned as a young lady with mental disabilities but an active physical life until she had a major stroke in her 20's. Her mother gave up her life to care for her at home until she was not physically able to in 2000. Karen spent many times in and out of the hospitals as an adult with sickness related to her PKU. She has been studied by many as she was the only living adult who suffered mental disabilities from PKU. Karen spent the last 9 years in the Brian Center of Eden until the time of her home going. The Brian Center became her home and family as was evident when she didn't want to leave to have Christmas at home with family. Karen had so many special friends and was one to never meet a stranger. She was very active in the Special Olympics and Girl Scouts in her younger years. Her Girl Scout leader (Peanut) remembers Karen as an teen who was special and was registered as the second special needs girls scout to be an assistant in NC. Karen was recently known for counting the cars that traveled by the Brian Center almost daily.

I can't began to name all the people who's played a part of her life from taking care of her to visiting with her and being her friend. Because of Karen's love and affection for everyone, she made life worth living.

We can only imagine the family reunion of Mom, Dad and daughter along with her two special nieces Taylor and Meredith in heaven. What a day of rejoicing they're having as we long to join in one day." Kevin

Karen became a special part of my everyday life (as well as her mother) when she came to live at Brian Center/Eden. I have very many special memories with her...but none so sweet as singing "Jesus Loves Me" with her. As the Activity Director, I had a lot of opportunities to "have fun" with Karen, but also very many touching conversations. She touched my life in a way words will never be able to fully express....we will all miss her, especially me....prayers for you and yours...find strength and courage in the sweet reunion Karen is having your with your parents and nieces...it brings a tearful smile to me...because I know that Karen is now truly so very happy!! She couldn't wait to meet Jesus face-to-face. <3

I was so saddened to hear of Karens passing, Kevin. She was a spectacular person who always put a big smile on my face each and every time I saw her. I was Karen's in home health aid back in the early 90s and had the pleasure of meeting her and your mother, father, and grandmother as well. Every day I sat with Karen was indeed a great one. She always made me smile and was truly a beautiful person to the very core. We used to sit and watch the Price is Right every day and she always made watching it so much fun! She had a wonderful sense of humor and will truly be missed by so many people. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to you all, Kevin. God bless you all, such a wonderful family.

My heart hurts with the passing of Karen, but I know she is smiling down on us and is so happy now. I have known Karen for the past 8 years, while being the cook at the Brian Center. She always spoke to me when she saw me and told me how pretty I was, she always made my day better, even if it was a bad day. She was a beautiful lady, with so much love in her heart. My prayers are with you and your family as you give her over to the Lord.... Elianne Garrett
