Maurice Altham, 82 died Monday June 1, 2015 in Winston Salem at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital Cancer Center. A memorial of Maurice?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s life will take place Friday June 5th, 11 am at The Church of Epiphany, 538 Henry St. Eden, NC. Maurice was a United States citizen, but was born and raised in Preston, England. He attended Manchester University where he studied Business and Textiles. Maurice and his wife Marlene traveled to the US in 1962 aboard the Queen Mary, now moored permanently in Long Beach CA. Maurice loved to explore the world. By the age of 21 he had visited all the cities along the Mediterranean while he served in the British Royal Air Force. From that point forward, travel was his passion. He made it his mission in life to leave no culture unseen. He traveled extensively through his work as a General Merchandise Manager for B Altman & Company, 5th Ave NY and was able to explore the treasures of the world. He loved to share his tales of exploration with an added twist of British dry humor with family and friends. The thrill of a new experience in travel was something that always piqued his interest. Upon retirement, anywhere the road would take him, he and his wife Marlene would go, he would have the bags packed and off they went around the world. Aside from travel he loved animals, especially his cat Tom, gardening, reading, spending time at his pool, history, education, literature, Art and computer technology and photographing Florida sunsets. Maurice and family moved to Eden, NC 1985 via the expansion of the Fieldcrest Cannon Retail Outlet Division. Maurice retired President of the retail division in 1997. He is survived by his wife, of 58 years, Marlene P. Altham of Eden. His daughter Sally A. Kees of Charlotte, NC as well as his son US Air Force SMSgt Christopher Altham and his wife Julie Altham of Warner Robbins, Ga. Maurice had 4 grandchildren Wesley, Madeline, Alexandra and Elizabeth. Our family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Boris M. Darovsky, Medical Oncologist as well as the nursing staff of Morehead Memorial Hospital for their attentiveness to Maurice?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s care. There will be no formal visitation. The family will receive friends other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Barry L. Joyce Cancer Support Fund. This organization supports local cancer patients within our community that have critical medical needs. Information on contributions can be found at bljcancerfund.org. Mrs. Altham, I was so sorry to hear Mr. Altham passed. You both were among my favorite customers. I loved to live vicariously through your travels. Mr. Altham once gave me suggestions about a trip to Ireland which we followed and were so pleased that he sent us, among other places, to the Old Ground Hotel. You have my prayers and sympathy.
