William Herman Allen, Jr. of 308 Maplewood Drive, Eden entered the church triumphant on February 2, 2014. A funeral service will be held Friday February 7 at 11:00 am at The First Presbyterian Church of Eden with The Reverend Peter Smith presiding. Following the service, the interment will be held at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens with Military Rites performed by the Rockingham County Veterans Honor Guard.

Born January 11, 1930, to the late William Herman Allen, Sr. and Mary Barnes Allen of Bunn Level, NC, Herman was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley Webster Allen, of 54 years and his sister Mary Helen Allen. Herman is survived by his devoted brother and sister-in-law, William Thomas and Elizabeth (Lib) Pate Allen of Bunn Level; beloved sons and daughter-in-laws, James Thomas (Jim) and Diane Lepping Allen of Omaha, Nebraska, and David Kyle (Kyle) and Elizabeth (Beth) Patton Allen of Cary; his five loving grandchildren, Tyler, Meredith, Courtney (Allen Preece), Elizabeth and Mark; his caring nephews and niece Dean, Marc and Gloria Webster and Tom Allen, his cherished grandson-in-law, Jeffery Preece and his dear and most faithful caregiver, Bobby Hampton.

Herman, an Air Force veteran and a graduate of Wake Forest University, worked as a cost specialist for 38 years at the DuPont plant in Martinsville, VA. With a deep love for people and a kind heart, he could often be found volunteering his time to raise funds for a variety of community based and church affiliated organizations.

As a faithful and longtime member of The First Presbyterian Church of Eden, he served as an elder, as clerk of session and as a chancel choir member. With his background in accounting, he often lent his skill and expertise to the church?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s finance ministry. As a clear thinker, and as a compassionate and caring pillar of the church, he was often tapped to serve on search committees for new pastors and helped spearhead the church?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s move to its current location.

As a son, brother, husband, father and friend, Herman was one who always sought to bring out the best in others and to give his very best to others. He was a gentle soul and a joy to be around. He had a keen mind and a big heart which he used to help anyone in need. With a deep Christian faith, he taught those who knew him the value of faith, family, friendship and hard work. As much as he gave to others, he always realized he was blessed beyond measure by what he received in return.

At his passing, the Allen family wishes to express its deep gratitude for his other son and longtime caregiver, Certified Nursing Assistant, Bobby Hampton. For 11 years, Bobby blessed our family by taking care of our mom and dad. For the last 5 years of dad?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s life, the two of them were inseparable. For his exceptional devotion to dad, our family is most grateful for the years he added to dad?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s life and the life he added to dad?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s years.

The Allen family would also like to thank the many doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals at Morehead Hospital who tended to dad?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s medical needs and who showed him such great dignity and compassion as he neared the end of his life.

We would also like to thank his friends at the Golden Corral, Hardees and Chaney?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s who brought him into the circle of their friends and who brought him such joy.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, February 6, 6:00-8:00pm at Fair Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Eden.
