Laura, Our deepest sympathy and prayers to you and your family at this sad time. Larry was a "one of a kind" guy. He would stop by our house and he and Wayne would have some INTERESTING conversations. They did agree on a lot but not all.....made for some great discussions. We especially enjoyed the comic books that he had written and shared with us. Our thoughts are with you. Carol and Wayne Fagge

Our daughter Amy loved Larry Surber as her 4th Grade teacher. She commented that he controlled a class full of 4th Graders and managed to gain their deep respect at the same time. He took them to their highest level of thinking and learning in creative ways that she remembers still. She commented to us today that he introduced her to the subject she loves the most: math. He made geography, poetry, and science come alive for his young students. He was an expert at getting students to think. John and I treasure his friendship. He was an interesting person to know and could talk with anyone on practically any topic. Fond memories live in our hearts today as we send sincere sympathy to Laura and Rachel.

Mrs.Surber, I was sadden to heard of the passing of Mr.Surber. I as a former student at Douglass Elementary School had Mr.Surber for my Best year of elementary school(the 4th grade). He was indeed one of my all time favorite teachers. That for sure was my best year and most memorable year. I can't even begin to tell you about all that I learned from him. It was him that introduced our class to the Jack Tales and read to us everyday after lunch. I looked forward to that time everyday. I loved those stories and I still to this day love them. I hope to one day read them to my grandchildren and will think of him fondly as I do. My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy's are with you and your family at this difficult time and in the days ahead. Karen Gatewood

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Surber's passing. He was my 4th grade teacher at Douglass Elementary some 38 years ago, and he was probably one of the best teachers I ever had. He challenged us intellectually, but at the same time, always made learning fun. I can still remember learning about electric currents and going on nature hikes behind Ellerbe Court. One of those hikes even produced a snake that became the newest member of our class. The best memory I have involved another class pet named Huge Henry. This had to be the largest hermit crab my 8 year old eyes had ever seen. I was elated at being chosen to take Huge Henry home one weekend to take care of him. Needless to say, my parents did not seem to share in my enthusiasm. I hope he knew how much he touched the lives of so many former students. He will never be forgotten, and my deepest condolences go out to his family.

Mrs. Surber, I am saddened to hear about the loss of your husband. I was very blessed to have Mr. Surber as my 4th grade teacher. I have so many fond memories of that class and remember how much I enjoyed 4 the grade. We loved to sit and listen to him tell us stories and read books such as the "Jack Tales". I looked forward to him reading and letting his pet snake crawl around on the floor. I also remember many fun games and field trips and hikes. He had a unique connection with kids and people. I feel very lucky and blessed that I had him as a teacher. I am a teacher today because of Mr. Surber and his wonderful gift. My deepest regrets to you and your family. Brindon Christman
