Donald M. Bernard, Jr., 89, died Monday, October 28, 2013, at the Forest at Duke Retirement Community in Durham.

He was born on December 8, 1923, in Austin, Texas.

Don attended high school at the George School in New Town, Pennsylvania, and earned his engineering degree from Duke University in 1948. Don was in the Army Specialized Training Program at Boston College in 1943 and then was transferred to the Army in Europe, from 1944 to 1946, landing in Normandy and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

Don married Betsy Hodges in 1946. He worked as project manager for Shell Oil Company. His work took him to four different states in the U.S. and then to Japan and Saudi Arabia. He received a Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1959 as "Man of the Year" for the state of Washington. He was also active in the Presbyterian Church as a Sunday School teacher and an elder. Don retired from Shell in 1985 and he and his wife moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina. In 1996 they moved to the Forest at Duke Retirement Center in Durham, North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife and three children; daughter, Martha B. Scherer of Vienna, Austria; daughter, Carol B. Snyder of Huntingdon, PA; and son, Donald M. Bernard III of Houston, Texas; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Bernard Pace of Fort Worth, Texas.

A private graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 2, at Overlook Cemetery, in Eden, North Carolina.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the Health and Wellness Center at the Forest at Duke for their loving care of Don over the past three and a half years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice .
