Rivers Slaydon Prewette, 73, of 5465 NC Highway 700 in Eden, passed away early Friday morning, August 16, 2013, at Hospice Home of Rockingham County in Wentworth.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Monday August 19, 2013 at Fair Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Slaydon Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Prewette was born January 17, 1940 in Rockingham County, NC; daughter of the late Edwin Joseph and Pearl Jones Slaydon. She was a retiree of American Tobacco Company. Mrs. Prewette had many accomplishments in the women's horseshoe pitching arena, to include: two-time Senior Ladies World Champion, 17-time North Carolina Ladies State Champion, she attended 16 World Tournaments and pitched in 15 of those, she was the Secretary / Treasurer of the NC-HPA (Horseshoe Pitcher's Association) from 1998 through 2012, and was the NC-HPA Delegate to the World Tournament.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Juanita G. Kirkman. She is survived by her husband, Alfred D. "Buck" Prewette of the home; daughters, Barbara "Dale" Gregory of North Haverhill, NH and DeLena Kirkman Davis of Eden; and one son, Randall Wayne Stophel and wife, Cathy, of Ruffin; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert Lee Slaydon and wife, Ann and Joseph "Pete" Slaydon and wife, Vivian, both of Eden; and sister, Florine Hammock, also of Eden.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon 4 - 6 PM at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375 or to NC Horseshoe Pitcher's Association, 2223 Old Greensboro Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

I am very sorry that a Very Dear Friend of Mine has Passed Away.Rivers has been a good Friend since I began pitching in 1990.Rivers and Buck Have been Great Role models for everyone they came in contact with in the Sport of Horseshoe Pitching and I think their home life was just as rewarding.There were many times over the years that Rivers gave me encouragement and set me back on the right track and for that I am truly grateful .May God comfort you Buck during these days ahead and may He Bless your Family and give them Strength in Knowing that She is in a Blessed and Peaceful Place
