Obituary For Laura Katherine Winn
June 21, 1995 - March 17, 2024

Laura Katherine Winn passed away on March 17, 2024 after battling a long illness. She was surrounded by her loved ones as she went to be with the Lord. She was born on June 21, 1995 to Janet and David Winn in Eden, NC. She was a light in the lives of all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at 3pm Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Morehead High School Auditorium. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service, at 2pm.

Laura cherished the people in her community and in the world. Her passion for helping others was reflected in all the work she did in her home town and many areas in East Africa. She raised money for Naomi’s Village by organizing her Kicking for Kenya Soccer tournaments and also spent two summers in Africa working on various research projects.  She loved dancing, cheer, soccer, gymnastics and any kind of science competition. She also loved being outside in nature and taking long walks.

After graduating from Morehead High School, Laura attended Duke University on a full scholarship. She then worked at the Duke Hospital for 2 years before starting medical school at Johns Hopkins University. Early on she made the decision that being a doctor wouldn’t be in her future plans.  She worked for a year in Baltimore before moving to Greenville, South Carolina. Laura loved learning, traveling, and meeting people from different backgrounds through mission work. She lived full throttle, a woman of deep conviction.

Laura will be remembered for her kind heart, bright smile, compassionate nature and being a friend to everyone. She loved her friends fiercely with a love so loyal and true. She lives on in the hearts of those she left behind. She is survived by her parents, Janet Gunter Winn and David Wayne Winn of the home; brother, Alex Charles Winn of Durham, NC; “unbiological sister”, Sidney Corum; grandmother, Lois Gunter of Virginia Beach.  Laura is also survived by aunts and uncles - Phyllis Adamson and Bill Salem, Susan and Bill Wagoner, Kim and Doug Brooks, Eric and Amy Winn, and Amy Sturgill and cousins - Kelsey Adamson, Carrie Adamson, William Wagoner, Madi and Luke Thompson, Will Brooks, Jacob and Jessica Winn, Dianna Winn, Isabella Sturgill and Reese Sturgill.
