Obituary For Otis "David" Evans, Jr.
August 9, 1944 - March 18, 2018

Otis "David" Evans, Jr., 73, of 312 Grant Street in Eden, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, March 23rd at Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial to follow in Overlook Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, 6 - 8 PM, at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

David was born, August 9, 1944 in Martinsville, VA, to the late Otis David Evans, Sr. and Vera Smith Evans.  He was a member of Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church where he joined, as a child. He was a graduate of Morehead High School, Class of 1962 and a graduate of High Point University with a Bachelors Degree in Business.  He was a veteran of the NC National Guard.  David grew up in Stoneville, NC before his family moved to Leaksville (now Eden) where they built the Mar-Gre Motel and, the following year, the Mar-Gre Restaurant.  In 1983 the restaurant burned and David rebuilt what is now The Sirloin House.  Many local families will remember that it was originally Shoney's.  As a very successful businessman, David also owned the Eggleston Tire Company which he later sold. He was the owner and operater of Home Lumber Company, a family business since 1945.  Over the years, David employed over 125 people.  He loved NASCAR and had worked for Woods Brothers Racing Team with car #21.  David enjoyed traveling as well as spending time with his family at his Smith Mountain Lake home.  He loved to entertain friends and having family gatherings at his home.  He was a member of the Eden Moose Lodge, American Legion and Appalachian Lumberman's Club.  One of David's loves was classic cars. On his first date with his wife, Carolyn, he picked her up in a Chevy 409.  Shortly before his passing, David shared a precious moment in time with Carolyn when he reminded her that their first date "was in a "409" and our last date will be in 409"....which, ironically, was his room number at the hospital.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carolyn Moore Evans of the home;  son, Todd Evans and wife, Melinda of Stoneville;  two grandchildren, Colby and Cally Evans of Stoneville;  brothers-in-law, Nelson Moore and wife, Glenda, and Michael Moore and wife, Cheryl;  sisters-in-law, Linda Moore Lothian and Brenda Wright Moore;  and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Helen C. Moore;  father-in-law, J. Paul Moore;  brothers-in-law, Harold Moore and Dr. George Lothian;  nephews, Joey Moore and Chad Moore;  and great-nephew, Matthew Grant.
