Walter "Walt" James Montgomery, 85, of 423 Victor Street in Eden passed away early Sunday morning, February 4, 2018, at UNC Rockingham Health Care.  

A graveside service will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, February 8th, at Danview Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 11 - 11:45 AM at Fair Funeral Home before proceeding to the cemetery for the graveside service, and other times at the residence.

Mr. Montgomery was born April 16, 1932 in Spray, NC, to the late Walter Lee Montgomery and Vergie Dunn Montgomery.  He was of the Baptist faith and a retiree of Karastan Mill after 63 years of service.  Walt was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener and loved to watch NASCAR and football.  His daughters' say, of their father, "Our Daddy was our heart, soul, and most of all our hero".

He is survived by his two daughters, Kay M. Holliday of the home and Sherree M. Wilson and husband, Keith of Reidsville;  grandson, Glenn Holliday of Eden;  sisters, Carol M. Sharp and husband, Gene and Margaret M. Shockley, both of Eden;  his special companion, "Rowdy"; numerous nieces and nephews; and his excellent caregiver, Debbie Jordan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Scott Montgomery;  sisters, Ruby M. Stowe, Mildred "Bill" Pruitt, and Doris M. Grogan;  and brother, Henry Montgomery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Rockingham County Humane Society, 205 Boone Rd., Eden, NC, 27288.
