Obituary For Norwood Janney Cheek
August 21, 1926 - May 5, 2017


Norwood Janney Cheek, 90, of 7B Carolyn Court in Eden, passed away on Friday morning, May 5, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, May 7, at First Presbyterian Church, 582 Southwood Drive, Eden, NC.  Burial will follow in Lawson Cemetery with Military Honors to be performed by Rockingham County Veteran's Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.  The family will receive friends Saturday evening, 6 - 8 PM, at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home of Susan and Bill Pace, 212 West Harris Place in Eden.

Norwood was born August 21, 1926 in Leaksville (now Eden), NC, the son of the late Lyman and Okey Janney Cheek and was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Eden, NC.  He served in the US Army from 1944-1946 during World War II in Germany.  After returning home, attended UNC-Chapel Hill and finished at Pfeiffer College.  He was an International Trade Specialist for the U.S. Department of Commerce, retiring in 1995.  After retirement, he volunteered his time to First Presbyterian Church.  He was an avid Tarheel fan and loved spending time at the beach with family and friends.

Norwood is survived by his four children, Ann Fair and husband, Neil of Eden, Susan Pace and husband, Bill of Eden, Phyllis Garrett and husband, Dan of Austin, Texas, and Chip (Norwood, Jr.) Cheek and wife, Andrea Richards of Los Angeles, California;  grandchildren, Annie Fair and husband, Dean Micetich, Alice Smith and husband, Colin, Ty Pace and wife, Torie, Brett Garrett, Phoebe Cheek and Gray Cheek;  step-grandchildren, Michele Pace, Jay Pace, Alicia Pace Riddle (deceased) and husband,Scott Riddle, Christie Garrett Strupe and husband, Mike, and Darrell Garrett;  great-grandchildren, Felix Fair Micetich, Matilda Fair Micetich, Callaway Smith, Rachelann Pace, and soon-to-be, John Tyler Pace, Jr.;  step-great-grandchildren, Zandy Benson, Anna Benson, Ivy Pace, Kinley Pace, Elizabeth Riddle, Katherine Riddle, Ben Riddle, Charlotte Riddle, and Garrett Strupe;  and the mother of his children, Phyllis Dyer Stickels of Eden.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Marshall Cheek and step-granddaughter, Alicia Pace Riddle.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Rockingham County for the loving care they provided to their daddy.
