Obituary For Major Mae Harris
July 8, 1925 - April 23, 2014


Major Mae Harris (Salvation Army), 88, of Eden, NC, formerly of Shelby and Durham, NC was promoted to glory on Wednesday morning, April 23, 2014 surrounded by family and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be conducted at 11 AM on Friday, April 25 at The Salvation Army Church, 314 Morgan Road in Eden, NC. A graveside service will be held at 3 PM on Friday afternoon at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 2107 Liberty Street, Durham, NC 27703.

Major Harris was assigned to Eden in 1980 to establish the Salvation Army Corp. She started out in a small church building on Flynn Street. Later a tornado destroyed the church and the Salvation Army moved to 314 Morgan Road. In 1989 fire destroyed the church and it moved to the Old Spray Court House. Later a bond drive was arranged to benefit a new building on Morgan Road. During Major Harris' serving in The Salvation Army she was a force in four buildings built for God and The Salvation Army. During retirement and health issues she dedicated herself in service for the Lord in Eden. Mae

She is survived by two brothers, Gordon F. Harris and wife, Josephine of Boone, NC and Charles L. Recktenwald and wife, Jane of Durham, NC; 10 nieces, 10 nephews, 24 great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening, 6 - 9 PM, at Fair Funeral Home, 432 Boone Road in Eden.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to The Salvation Army, 314 Morgan Street, Eden, NC 27288.
