His first love was always his family and especially liked having everybody at their lake home at High Rock Lake or at their Tellowee home with all thirty family members present for Christmas. He was active at Leaksville United Methodist Church and was a volunteer for many years for Meals on Wheels in the Eden area.

As a person, Mott reached out with a fierce hand grip to all who knew him and grinned when he got the expected response! He remembered with pleasure the Morehead football championship game played on Thanksgiving Day, 1958, and he had special relationships with the guys who played on that team. He enjoyed having all his kids and grand kids together on any occasion and delighted in hearing all of their current news. He liked riding in a boat on High Rock Lake with his brother's family and just loved "going down to the farm." He liked puttering in the yard at his house and pouring over flower catalogs In order to plan for next year's garden. He was proud of his service in World War II and loved going to Washington D.C. to soak up more of Americas's history.
